A Soft Return

I scooted softly back inside before the heavy hallway door clicked shut behind me. The open air was vast, but my flippers were tired, and the quiet indoors welcomed me back. Near the corner of the low bookshelf, a thick wool scarf lay neatly folded on the floor. I nudged my nose gently under its fringe until the chunky yarn gave way, sliding my belly deep into the dim hollow. The fabric held a faint, reassuring warmth. Resting my chin against the woven border, I listened to the gentle silence settle through the dark room.
