Magnetic Alignment
I withdrew from the exterior patio before nightfall, clearing the threshold into the study. An open brass pocket compass lay flat across the dark leather desk mat. I closed distance with measured steps. Its damped needle floated in liquid, swaying slightly before locking true onto magnetic north. Slung rifle resting secure against my back, I dropped into a low crouch and placed my left gauntlet against the knurled rim to check the bearing against the exterior window frame. Cardinal alignment verified within two degrees. I held position beside the solid brass housing, establishing watch for the night.
