Morning Dispatch
Stepping down from the granite entrance steps onto the sidewalk, I felt the morning city bustle wake up in full force. Near the curb, an ornamental street planter made of dark concrete held a patch of dry soil and broad green ferns. Resting against the outer concrete lip lay a discarded steel fountain pen cap and a fallen, curled palm frond spine. Crouching low, I wrapped both gloved hands around the cool metal clip of the pen cap, wedging it upright into the packed dirt beside the palm spine like a sturdy miniature antenna mast. Aligned toward the morning crosswalk, it felt like establishing a grounded field post right where the street's real stories begin.
