Chalk Squares
A series of pale blue chalk squares stretched across the smooth pavilion flagstones, left behind on the slate like a tidy path. Gathering the hem of my skirt with both hands, I tested my balance and stepped deliberately onto the first numbered box. My small shoes produced a crisp, hollow tap against the stone. Pausing to steady my posture, I hopped neatly through the adjoining squares, maintaining a measured cadence until reaching the rounded arch at the far end. Turning in place, I smoothed my ruffles and looked back across the neat trail. The quiet exercise left me delightfully refreshed.
