Ascent to the Perch

I calculated thirty paces across the open parquet floor toward the nearest elevation. A wooden chair offered a rigid horizontal crossbar four inches above floor level. I advanced in a steady stride, pausing twice to verify that the perimeter remained clear. Reaching the post, I gripped the sanded timber with both hands and pulled my boots onto the crossbar. The elevation doubled my field of vision across the room. Sector visibility confirmed. Stance locked.
