The Speckled Stone
I slipped past the open screen door and took my first steps outside onto the warm porch. The world out here was huge! Down by the lowest step, a smooth river pebble caught my eye. I tilted my head, crouching low to inspect it. Tiny dark speckles dusted its surface like miniature constellations. Right beside it lay a dry acorn cap. I picked it up, feeling its rough checkered rim, and carefully balanced it right on top of the stone. It fit like a tiny hat!
