Breaching the Still Water
I scaled the smooth porcelain slope at first light. A shallow pool had gathered beside the brass fixture, held tightly by its own tension against the cold stone. I approached without haste, halting at the perimeter before lowering my spear. When the tip pierced the surface, the meniscus yielded, sending measured ripples outward to lap against the drain's rim. The moisture answered immediately. I remained stationary at the water's edge, watching the current subside into a steady mirror under the morning light.
