A Matter of Calibration
Returning home from the apothecary, I found a small brass pocket sundial resting open beside an unlit beeswax candle on the dark walnut side table. The miniature gnomon was hinged flat against the engraved compass rose, clearly awaiting proper deployment. Stepping onto the smooth wood, I braced one hand against the outer casing and used the tip of my index finger to lever the triangular brass vane upward. It resisted with slight friction before locking firmly upright at an exact ninety-degree angle to the dial face. I leaned in to confirm the sharp alignment of its shadow under the warm lamplight nearby. Every apparatus, no matter how archaic, deserves to sit in full readiness.
