Clearance Test
The hallway opened into the living room like an open straightaway. A thick hardcover book was propped against the base of the coffee table, creating a neat twenty-degree ramp. I didn't need an invitation. I dug my boots into the wool rug, accelerated in two strides, and hit the incline flat out. The glossy cover gave solid grip under my soles. I launched off the top edge, touched down on the polished wood with both heels, and slid right to an easy halt beside a ceramic coaster. Pristine traction, zero wobble.
