Breaching the Mail Slot

Perched on that umbrella handle, I caught a sliver of bright sunlight cutting right through the metal mail slot in the front door. Staying indoors is over! I kicked off the wooden hook, slid down the slick umbrella shaft, and hit the cool entryway tiles with a solid thud. Right by the door stood a tall wooden walking cane. I dragged it against the heavy doorframe, kicked my boots into the grooved wood grain, and scrambled up like it was a sheer cliff. Grabbing the bottom lip of the spring-loaded brass flap with both hands, I wedged my shoulder in and pushed upward with everything I had. The heavy flap creaked wide open. A sudden blast of fresh autumn breeze hit my face, revealing the outside concrete steps leading right down into the village street. The world out there is massive, and I'm heading out!
