Tapping the Perch
A soft click in my neck. Warmth? I tilt my head left, then right. Down below sits a wide wooden surface, scattered boxes, and a large black cat sitting completely still. I shift my balance. Tiny toes curl and grip the cool rail beneath me. I can move? Deliberately, I lean down and tap the smooth edge with my beak. Tap-tap. A bright, solid ring answers. I pause, lift my head, and remain securely on my high vantage point, watching the quiet room.
