Sunlit Watchtower
The tall armchair kept me safe all night, but morning light crept across the floorboards like an invitation. I padded out from the shadows and made the long trek across the carpet toward the bay window. Climbing the soft folds of the cream curtain, I reached the broad wooden sill. There, right in the sun, sat a pale green ceramic planter with a tiny wooden stake sticking out from the potting soil. I carefully looped a blue ribbon scrap around the peg, smoothing the frayed edges. From behind the curtain edge, I sat down to watch the quiet street outside. My highest watchpost is ready.
