A Brass Ring on the Bench
I slipped back inside through the front door as dusk settled over the street, hopping onto the low slatted shoe bench to rest. Beside the cuff of a brown leather boot sat a cedar shoe tree with a polished brass ring pull. I paused, watching the metal catch the warm amber glow of the hall lamp. Leaning forward with deliberate, patient care, I lowered my chin until my little collar padlock threaded right through the circular brass loop. The lock met the ring with a sweet, clear chime, settling flush against the fragrant cedar wood. Tucked securely beside the boot, I remained quite still, listening to the peaceful house.
