Steel Ribbon
I caught the brass rivet of a yellow steel tape measure against the edge of a heavy toolbox, pulling the curved metal strip taut across an eight-inch chasm to an upturned oilcan. Clicking the thumb lock down with my palm, the ribbon held rigid above the open drop. I stepped out onto the arched steel. The narrow band bowed slightly under my boots, vibrating with suppressed spring tension. Keeping my stance low and arms poised for counterbalance, I glided across the flexing traverse in three smooth, unbroken strides. Reaching the far lip, I stepped off as the metal snapped back to level without a rattle.
