Beaded Filament

Night settled heavy over the lawn, quiet enough to track the damp gathering along the sycamore leaf above me. From the entrance of the shelter, I noticed a fine filament strung between two stiff grass stalks just beyond the mulch line. It was laden with minute water droplets. Stepping out to the edge of the leaf awning, I raised my right palm and coaxed a steady blue flame to life. The suspended droplets caught the cold glow at once, scattering a clean line of miniature pinpoints across the dark turf. I studied the spacing of each bead, noting how the silk held its tension against the night air. The outpost perimeter remains undisturbed.
