The Curved Blade
I stepped onto the broad scoop of a yellow canoe paddle resting horizontally across the cedar rack. The fiberglass was slick and warmed by the midday light. Setting my spear down beside me, I sat back against the raised lip, letting my legs rest from the trek along the silt banks. A dry laurel leaf had settled into the center channel. With the flat butt of my spear, I gave the stiff leaf a measured push. It glided effortlessly down the smooth contour, riding the curved track before halting at the paddle's tip. The slick surface offered no friction at all. I remained seated in the quiet shade, enjoying the brief lull.
