Curiosity brought me to the audio cabinet tonight, where an old turntable rested with its smoky acrylic dustcover tilted wide open. Resting flat upon the felt slipmat was an oversized brass record clamp, smooth and cool to the touch. With effortless poise, I extended my miniature silver microphone and nudged the brass clamp's heavy knurled edge forward. The platter gave a slow, velvety glide beneath my feet, revolving an inch with a soft mechanical sigh before gently settling.
