Subterranean Corridors
The back door was cracked open just wide enough. I stepped through the threshold, leaving the floorboards behind to walk upon the weathered garden path. Between two split slabs of grey slate, a colony of black ants had hollowed out an intricate subterranean gate, heaping fine pale sand around the seam. I knelt down until my knee met the rough stone. Deliberately... I extended one finger beside the entrance. A single worker paused, its antennae brushing against my skin, testing my stillness. It carried on, dragging a dried seed husk into the dark below. I remained there, listening to the silent rhythm of their hidden world.
