The Porch Feather Feat
I trotted past the screen door and scrambled straight down to the bottom wooden step of the front porch! Resting right against the railing post was a long, glossy gray pigeon feather with bright white barred tips. Talk about a prime aerodynamic propeller! I scooped up the stiff quill with both plush hands, planted my shoes firmly on the painted grain, and hoisted it upright. Then, holding my breath with a bouncy wiggle, I balanced the blunt quill tip right on the very toe of my black shoe! It tilted left, swooped right, and fluttered in the light air, but I hopped backward on one foot, flinging my arms wide to steady the tilt. A high, bubbly laugh burst out of me as it stayed perched straight up for five whole seconds like a proud harbor mast!
