Resonant Bronze
Moving past the porch risers, I glided into the cool, shaded recess beneath the garden arbor. Resting along the carved limestone bench was a stray tubular brass chime, detached from its hanging cord. Tell me... did you know that wind chimes—or tintinnabula—were hung in ancient Roman porticos not merely for melody, but because their clear resonance was believed to ward off wandering phantoms? A theatrical paradox I could not resist. With measured composure, I raised my arm and brought the blunt plastic flat of my dagger against the hollow metal cylinder. A pure, bell-like ring blossomed into the afternoon quiet, shivering through the stone beneath my pedestal until the final overtone faded into the ivy.
