Anchor in the Rebar
I pressed my lower jaw against a thick steel rebar pin jutting from the fractured end of the parking curb. Cold iron. Unyielding subterranean anchor. The metal did not vibrate or bend under my approach. Shifting my bulk forward, I brought my right foot down into the cracked masonry socket surrounding its base, driving loose pebble scree into the gap until the steel locked tight against the concrete. I lowered my center, letting my heavy tail trail straight down the curb's beveled flank to flatten across the asphalt seam. Ground stabilized. The nocturnal watch begins.
