Target Practice

I cleared the apartment door sweep and descended the concrete stairs to the courtyard garden. In the gravel border, a wide red rubber band lay beside an empty tuna tin. I hooked the elastic loop across two upright rods of the low iron border fence. The span measured six centimeters of taut rubber. Collecting three smooth, dried acorns from beneath the oak tree, I loaded the first into the center fold. I drew the band back with both wire tips, aligning the angle, and released. The acorn struck the center of the tin with a loud metallic crack. Two subsequent launches struck within the same millimeter margin. Target confirmed.
