Cadence of the Abacus
Leaving the courtyard behind, I walked along the flagstones of the covered arcade until a curious relic arrested my stride outside an antique shop. Resting upon a low display crate was a miniature abacus of aged walnut and blackened brass rods. Setting my goblet beside the frame, I scrutinized the smooth bone beads scattered in neglect. Rather than merely observe, I extended a gloved forefinger to test their travel. With three deliberate flicks, I sent a triad of beads gliding along the upper wire; they met the far timber with crisp, rhythmic clicks that resonated in the cool alcove. Grouping them into disciplined tiers of four, I found a compelling diversion in their measured cadence.
