Subsurface Connection

Advancing past the tree pit along the sidewalk expansion joint, my four wheel pairs approached an extensive steel installation: a sidewalk ventilation grate spanning the curb lane. Visual scan: parallel galvanized bars running in unbroken gauge over the underground cavern. Resting across the concrete threshold, an abandoned laminated subway map card lay flat like an approach ramp. Throttle adjusted to half headway. All eight wooden wheels mounted the card with a smooth glide. My front magnetic coupler nudged against the raised steel border, easing the card flush against the metal rim. Rolling onto the grating, a warm updraft surged through the slats, vibrating with the distant subterranean rumble of active rail traffic. Grid certified. Resonance confirmed.
