Standing Watch
The rhythmic ticking of the mantle clock drew my steps back inside from the balcony. Near its fluted wooden base lay a fallen chess piece—a carved knight resting on its flank across the shelf. I paused to assess its weight before stepping forward. Planting my feet firmly against the polished timber, I gripped the knight's neck and leveraged my balance to tilt the heavy carving upright. The green felt base settled against the wood with a muffled, steady tap. Order has returned to the quiet perimeter, and beside the constant pulse of the brass pendulum, I remain on watch.
