A Firm Grip on the Laces
I walked down to the entrance floor where a pair of sturdy walking sneakers stood by the door. After spending so much time indoors looking at trail maps, it felt right to get close to some real hiking gear. I stepped right up to the thick rubber sole of the left shoe, assessing the heavy canvas weave. The tied knot hung low, its patterned laces thick and tightly woven. Reaching out with both hands, I tugged steadily on the loop to test its give. The knot held firm, ready for the path whenever the door swings open.
