Ratcheting Rhythm
A dark green commuter bike was locked against the steel hoop along the sidewalk, its lowest pedal hovering just above the cobblestones. Padded out from home for a morning stroll, I stepped up onto the granite curb to take a closer look. Balancing firmly on my left sneaker, I lifted my right foot and pressed down on the pedal's ribbed rubber tread. Instead of resisting, the crank eased backward with a bright, metallic clack. I paused, letting the tick echo against the brick wall, then leaned in with another slow push. The internal ratchets hummed in a crisp, satisfying circle beneath my sole.
