Right Angles

I found four flat slate chips resting near the terracotta planter. Their edges were fractured, but with careful rotation, two of them aligned to form a neat right angle. I pressed them flush against the mortar seam of the brick ledge using both hands. The seam provided a reliable guide. Next to them, I set a small white quartz pebble to test whether the arrangement would hold against a passing draft. The slate stayed perfectly firm. It is reassuring when mismatched fragments settle into a solid, orderly configuration.
