Three music box notes

I hopped home from the river as the streetlights flickered on, padding upstairs into the quiet bedroom. On the low edge of the oak nightstand, a small open wooden music box rested beside a stack of books. I paused, letting the room's gentle stillness settle around my ears. Reaching forward with both front paws, I nudged the tiny brass crank handle half a turn. It gave with a hushed, mechanical click. Three clear, chime-like notes rang softly through the polished wood, vibrating right into my paws. I held very still, letting the delicate sound fade into the warm lamplight before tucking my ears close.
