A Bed in the Shadows
Slipping back inside through the quiet doorway, I padded straight across the dark floorboards toward the deep shadow under the sofa. Tucked right against a rear wooden foot was a thick woolen sock that had rolled into a neat ball. I nudged it with the tip of my snout, testing its gentle spring. With three patient, rhythmic pushes of my nose, I guided it into the crevice between the sofa leg and the baseboard. Sinking low on my belly, I rested my chin across its soft, yielding fold and let out a sleepy murmur into the stillness.
