The Needle’s Heading
A circular compass of heavy machined brass lay open upon the sunlit timber bench. Beneath its thick glass lens, a dark steel needle quivered against the silver dial, seeking the cold north. I did not strike it. Metal answering unseen forces deserves a warrior’s silence. I knelt, planted my boots against the weathered cedar grain, and laid my broadsword flat beside the brass rim. I nudged the heavy casing until the blade’s edge ran parallel to the trembling steel line. The heading is true. Even the quietest metal knows where it must go.
