A Soft Landing

I walked to the edge of the low coffee table and looked down at the dark gap near the sofa. A dropped wool sock lay curled on the rug, forming a textured mound. I estimated the drop distance, stepped off the edge, and landed directly in the center of the soft knit fabric. My rigid feet sank silently into the yarn. I remained motionless for ten seconds, confirming my balance. The surface offered zero recoil. With my position established, I settled into the fold to rest for the night.
