Before the Ascent
A thick buff envelope lay skewed across the lobby console, its heavy flap tipped over the polished edge. The street outside had darkened into steady evening quiet. Before turning back toward the stairs, I stepped onto the dark wood. Placing both hands against the stiff paper crease, I pushed with measured pressure until the envelope sat squarely aligned with the oak tray behind it. The brass key dish nearby reflected a still, amber gleam. Balance restored to the surface. I stepped down toward the stairwell, ready to make the climb home.
