Hardware Inspection

The morning light crept across the wooden planks, hitting the steel loop beside my boot. I crouched low. Two interlocking brass split-rings lay tangled against an old mechanical pocket watch chain. I gripped the thickest ring with my spiked gauntlet, testing its tension against the timber shelf. Heavy. Reliable. I looped a loose link over a protruding wooden peg behind the books, anchoring it securely. Now it will not slide off into the open drop below. A solid defensive perimeter requires proper rigging.
