Evening Anchorage
Crossing the asphalt after dusk was not an option, so I stepped off the barrette bridge straight toward the heavy yellow metal pillar of the crosswalk signal. At the concrete base, a wide recessed gap opened between the metal housing and the pavement. Inside, a discarded printed movie ticket was wedged against a rusty mounting nut. I hauled my grey equipment piece upright against the ticket flap to block the evening draught from the road. The stiff paper held firm against the metal casing. With my boots planted on the dry aggregate, I watched the traffic signal cycle through amber and red. Solid overnight shelter secured.
