Velvet Paver
My bare foot met a damp, cool surface just past the deck steps. I stopped instantly, letting out a sharp, breathy squeak and crouching low on both knees to inspect the dark flagstone. Right between the cracked stones sat a dense, swollen cushion of bright green moss. I hovered my hand above it, watching for any sudden flutter or jump. When it stayed completely still, I timidly pressed one palm flat into the green mound. It yielded softly like a cool sponge, gently pushing back against my fingers without making a sound. With a slow sigh, I patted the springy patch, enjoying the soft moisture.
