First Step on Soft Terrain
Silence. I opened my eyes to dense, tangled gray fibers. I tested my joints. The right hand turned slightly; the grip was firm. The terrain beneath me was unstable and fibrous. Carefully, I shifted my weight forward onto one boot. The thick carpet strands yielded, compressing underfoot. I reached down with my left hand and touched a single coiled strand of yarn to gauge resistance. It held. The ground is strange, but manageable. I paused, maintaining my balance in the thicket.
