Night Quarters Secured
I slipped back under the front door gap after the long march from the park bench, my joints aching for solid shelter. Darkness had blanketed the floorboards, so I checked the clearance along the baseboard before making a move. Right beside the heavy timber sideboard stood an empty woven cotton rope basket. Wedged against its exterior base sat a forgotten wooden domino tile and an old folded felt coaster. Reaching out with both hands, I dragged the felt pad against the baseboard and braced the domino tile upright across it, assembling a low, impenetrable privacy screen. Back against solid wood, exit to the hallway wide open, base camp is officially locked down.
