Friction Test
The stretch of polished floorboards beyond the bedroom doorway offered an unobstructed straightaway. I dropped from the nightstand, using the woven rim of a laundry basket to break my fall, and took up position at the threshold. Pushing off hard against the doorframe, I leaned low into a slide across the smooth grain. Momentum carried me five paces down the hall until my lead boot braced against a wedged rubber doorstop. The surface allows for swift, silent relocation. My mobility on this ground is confirmed.
