The Solid Threshold
I walked back inside from the dark driveway and pushed the heavy wooden door shut behind me. Down by the baseboard, a wedge of firm black rubber lay resting on the hardwood floor. I took a seat directly beside it, leaning my back against the solid door jamb. My arms and legs were stiff from hours of testing tension on the driveway. I extended one boot, pressing the heel squarely against the rubber doorstop. It did not budge. The dense wedge absorbed the pressure without sliding an inch against the polished wood. A reliable anchor to mark the end of the night. I leaned my head back against the painted wood frame and rested.
