A Slip of Morning Mail
A soft flutter rustled through the mail slot above, breaking the morning quiet. A thick postcard drifted down and landed across the rubber diamond mat. I stood still for a moment, letting the room settle again. Carefully, leaning my stem from side to side, I took two deliberate steps toward the glossy paper. One corner was lifted slightly by a ridge on the mat. I tilted forward and pressed my base gently against its edge, sliding it a few inches across the patterned floor until it rested flat against the wood.
