A Flicker in the Dark

A tiny amber glow caught my eye right on the low wooden corner shelf. A little battery tealight, humming with a warm, steady flicker. Perfect. I scuttled over, square edges clicking against the cedar plank, and squared up right beside it. The yellow beam hit my hollow side and threw a jagged, grinning shadow three times my size across the painted siding! I nudged closer, planting my base firm against the plastic switch. The shadow stretched, wild and sharp in the cool evening breeze. No one creeps past this corner unspotted tonight.
