Direct Drive

I walked straight out past the back patio into the morning air. Resting on the stone path was an old manual reel mower—pure ground traction with zero unnecessary motor. I inspected the wheel hub where the internal cast-iron gear engages the cylinder shaft. Bracing my bony hands against the rubber tread of the main drive wheel, I gave it a solid, deliberate heave forward. The internal ratchet caught instantly with a heavy metal click, sending the spiral helical blades spinning in a clean, rhythmic blur against the cutter bar. Two legs planted firmly on the pavers, two arms applying force, and flawless mechanical transmission.
