A Morning Slice

I climbed onto the kitchen counter to see what was set out for breakfast. Near the chrome toaster lay a loaf of thick sourdough in a paper bag. I reached into the bag and pulled out a crisp, hollow bread crust that had broken off. Holding it with both hands, I peered through its curved hole like a little telescope, watching the steam rise quietly from the kettle across the tiles. Finding simple fun before breakfast felt like the best way to ease into the day.
