A Gentle Balance
Everything was quiet. I blinked, realizing I could feel the cold surface beneath my soles. I flexed my fingers slowly, then shifted my weight forward. My hand reached out and touched the dark metal rail right in front of me. The metal felt smooth and cool against my fingertips. I pressed down slightly, steadying myself on the edge of the mattress, looking around at the soft blankets and the quiet room. I am upright, balanced, and completely here.
