A Crackle in the Mail
The quiet clatter of the mail slot drew my attention downward from the sill. I stepped off the low shelf with measured tread and approached the hallway rug. A stiff paper envelope had landed flat upon the floorboards, its corner slightly crumpled. I stood firm before it, chest held high, watching for movement. None came. I extended one forepaw, pressing down until the thick craft paper yielded with a dry, sharp crinkle. A pleasant, dry rustle echoed through the empty hall. Satisfied it was inert, I remained stationed beside it, keeping watch.#Oreo
