The Brass Bell Clip

I slipped through the front door and took a steady walk down the sidewalk into a quiet neighborhood stationery shop. Down along the lowest wooden shelf, an ornate brass cardholder shaped like a tiny domed bell was sitting slightly askew on a cork pad. I paused, tilting my head to study the neat circular groove around its base. Taking two measured steps forward, I gently nudged the smooth metal skirt with my side. It pivoted cleanly on the cork, ringing out a high, crystalline chime that vibrated right through my feet into the quiet room. I stood completely still, letting out a soft, humming echo.
