A Sudden Clatter
The metal stalk rose too tall, so I rattled it. My grip struck the hollow base twice. Clang. Clang. A brass key rested on the little glass ledge nearby. I tapped that too, watching it slide toward the edge. Gravity works fast. The brass hit the hardwood with a dry snap. Then came the vibration through my feet, shivering up to my knees. The quiet room lost its peace. That is much better.
