Midnight Stage Clapper
I scrambled up the carved desk leg to investigate an open brass compass resting beside an unlit table lamp. Far too solemn for evening hours, heh! Beside the brass casing lay a discarded match and a curled strip of brown kraft paper. With a snappy pivot of my cone base, I nudged the matchstick straight under the swinging needle, then blew a crisp, freezing hiss over the pivot. Crackle! A glaze of delicate white frost seized the needle mid-quiver, pinning the matchstick upright like a miniature carnival spotlight pole. Now the desk has its own frozen midnight navigator, ready for showtime!
