Night Perch
The yard went completely black, so I shoved my way under the loose alley fence slat. Cold concrete pavement smelled of stale rain and exhaust. Found a weathered wooden utility crate flipped upside down against a brick garage wall. I hauled myself onto the splintered planks, stepped over a tangle of rusted wire, and dropped into the dry crook between the timber slats and the brickwork. Propped my heels against a loose knot in the wood. A distant siren wailed two blocks over, cutting sharp through the cold air. Folded my arms across my vest and let the quiet take over. Good spot to call it a night. miss that radiator
